Palate: my favourite breakfast cafe in Prahran, Melbourne

Palate Greville Street Prahran

Update May 2018: Palate has called it a day, folded up it’s menu and closed it’s doors.

Firstly, I need to preface this by saying that I’ve only spent 27 weekends living in Melbourne. That’s a total of 54 brunching days to date. So, I’m by my own admission still on my Melbourne breakfast specialist training wheels. But serving up an all-day breakfast seven days a week, Palate – located on the much-loved Greville Street – is my current regular breakfast go-to in the 3181 area.

What I love the most about this Paleo-inspired breakfast/lunch cafe is its menu. (Duh, right! Isn’t that the point). Although I always order the same thing (a create your own meal of two poached free range eggs; chilli garlic prawns; grilled marinated mushrooms; grilled asparagus, with pine nuts; smashed avocado, with red onion, tomato and lime; and a slice of buttered sourdough toast, which I’m aware completely destroys the Paleo principle). And as much as I never deviate from this strategy, I like the comfort of knowing that there are plenty of options if I want to mix it up. Maybe some day soon I’ll swap out the mushrooms for grilled tomatoes with basil. #imsoadventurous

The food…

With a two-sided A3 menu of breakfast/lunch/drinks offerings in reasonable-sized font there’s plenty to get excited about. Once I’ve tired of my chilli garlic prawns breakfast combo, the bread-free brekkie burger, eggs with quinoa and fresh strawberry pancakes all sound delish, as does the cauliflower rice risotto and grilled calamari for lunch.

While I’m not necessarily one to just jump on the Paleo bandwagon and call myself Pete Evans, the food at Palate is guaranteed to be fresh and tasty, and I always leave pretty happy with life.

It’s the best value Prahran-taxed breakfast I’ve found so far. (FYI, you’re looking at about $20 in total if you’re adding on a side of caffeine too).

Am I the only one who thinks it’s completely normal to have prawns for breakfast?

The verdict…

Palate is warmly fitted out with 1920s-inspired prints and cushioned seats, plus it’s very rarely empty giving it that bustling vibe. But it’s the mind-boggling choice and great big plate of deliciousness that sees Palate taking out the prestigious trophy of ‘my favourite Prahran breakfast spot’. At least for now.
